The complete guide
Everything CharmWriter can do
Every feature in the app, grouped by where it fits in writing a book — what it does, why it matters, and how to use it. Speak it or type it: everything here works either way. Start anywhere.
Start your book
Create the book, understand what it costs, and get to your first session.
Starting a book
Create the book, describe it in a sentence, and start talking.
- New book setup (title, author, premise, genre)
- Craft settings: point of view, tense, tone
- Book language, separate from interface language
- AI-detected craft settings after your first session
- Your first page, shown as a book page when Charm first drafts prose in the chat
- Your chapter shown as a book when you finish a session, open at what you just wrote
- A writing appointment: say when you will write next and get one reminder
- Your library: shelf, covers and list views
- Continue where you left off
- Book preview from the library
- Trash and restore
- Edit any book setting later, from the workspace or the dashboard
- A cover, once your first chapter exists
Charm writes your whole book
Describe the book, settle the big turns, and let Charm write every chapter.
- A whole-book plan from one description: acts, chapters, cast and world
- A length you choose, which sets the chapter count and the price
- The AI model that writes it, chosen per book, with the price moving to match
- The language the book is written in, set before it starts
- An opening you already wrote, pasted in as the voice to build on
- Editable outline before anything is written: retitle, reorder, add, remove
- The exact price, shown before the writing starts
- Scene-by-scene writing, roughly 600 to 900 words at a time, with a printed break where the story cuts to another time or place
- Story Bible built as the book is written
- A quality check on every chapter, with the scores kept
- Decision points at the big turns, with the roads not taken recorded
- Take another road, which re-plans the chapters not yet written
- Tell Charm something in your own words, at any decision point
- How often Charm stops to ask is yours to set
- Continuity scans at act boundaries
- Pause, close the tab, and pick it up later
- Hands the finished manuscript to Finish Book

- Nothing said in it ever reaches your chapters
- Keep a fact you like: read that one fact, press the button, and it joins the Story Bible
- Hear them say it, in a voice you choose for each character
- Or go hands-free: speak your question and they answer out loud

Common questions
Do I need to read this guide to use CharmWriter?
No. The app has guided tours and a spoken tutorial that walk you through your first book. This guide is here for when you want to know exactly what something does, or discover a feature you have not met yet.
Is every feature here available to me?
Almost all of them, on every account. One — Talk to Charm — is switched off by default, and its page says where the switch lives in Settings. Upload a Recording is on by default and can be switched off the same way.
What does CharmWriter not do?
It does not write screenplays or scripts, it does not manage academic citations and bibliographies, it is not a general-purpose grammar checker for arbitrary documents (though a manuscript written elsewhere can be imported as a book, and its chapters polished like any others), and it does not publish or submit your book to any store. It writes prose books with you and hands you the finished file.
How much of the writing does the AI do?
It drafts prose from what you have already said, and it never decides what happens in your story. Every draft is offered to you before it becomes part of the book, and every AI edit is shown as a change you accept or reject.
Do I own what I write?
Yes, entirely. You hold full copyright on every word. Your writing is not used to train AI models, not resold, and not shared with other users.
Do I have to use the microphone?
No. Typing is a first-class way to use CharmWriter, not a fallback. Every surface that accepts speech also accepts typing — the conversation, editorial questions, the chapter draft, the editor. You can write an entire book without ever pressing the microphone. Most writers use both, switching by mood, energy and whether anyone else is in the room.
