AI & Your Content
Last updated: April 15, 2026
CharmWriter uses AI to help you write books. Here's what you need to know about ownership, copyright, privacy, and publishing.
Who Owns What I Create?
You own everything. Every story idea, character, plot point, and manuscript you create with CharmWriter belongs to you. This includes the AI-generated prose, it's yours to use, edit, publish, and sell as you wish.
We do not claim any ownership of your content. We only access it to provide the service (hosting, processing, displaying your work back to you).
Can I Publish and Sell My Book?
Yes, absolutely. You can publish, sell, and distribute your work through any channel, Amazon KDP, Barnes & Noble Press, IngramSpark, your own website, or any other platform.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Amazon KDP requires you to disclose if your text content was "AI-generated" (produced by AI, even if substantially edited). Using AI for brainstorming, grammar checking, or outlining does not require disclosure.
- Copyright is evolving. The US Copyright Office has stated that purely AI-generated content may not be copyrightable, but AI-assisted content, where a human provides creative direction and editorial judgment, can be. Your workflow with CharmWriter (providing story direction, characters, plot, then editing AI output) positions you well.
- The more you shape it, the stronger your claim. Editing, revising, rearranging, and adding your own writing to AI output strengthens your copyright position.
Does CharmWriter Use My Writing to Train AI?
No. Never.
- CharmWriter does not train any AI model on your content
- Our AI providers (Anthropic for text, OpenAI for voice transcription only) do not use your data for training
- Your manuscripts remain private and are never shared beyond what's needed to process your requests
- AI providers retain data briefly for abuse monitoring (7–30 days), then delete it permanently
Is the AI-Generated Text Original?
AI generates text by predicting one word at a time based on patterns learned during training. It does not copy-paste from existing works. However, AI models have been trained on vast amounts of text, and there is a small possibility that outputs may resemble existing works.
We recommend:
- Reviewing and editing all AI output before publishing
- Running a plagiarism check on your final manuscript (tools like Grammarly, Copyscape, or Quetext)
- Adding your own voice and style through editing, this also strengthens your copyright
How Is My Voice Data Handled?
If you use the voice input feature, your audio is sent to OpenAI's Whisper API for transcription. The audio is processed in real-time and is not stored by CharmWriter. OpenAI may retain the audio for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring, then permanently deletes it.
Voice input is optional, you can always use text input instead. You can manage your voice consent in Settings → Privacy & Data.
What About the EU AI Act?
CharmWriter complies with the EU AI Act transparency requirements. When you export your book, you have the option to include an AI assistance disclosure. For creative and fictional works, the EU AI Act only requires disclosure "in an appropriate manner that does not hamper the display or enjoyment of the work", a note in your book's front matter is sufficient.
