Charm writes your whole book

Describe the book, settle the big turns, and let Charm write every chapter.

What it is

Charm writes your whole book is a mode where you describe the book you want and CharmWriter plans it and then writes every chapter of it, rather than drafting alongside you a session at a time. Planning happens first and costs very little: it produces an outline, a cast, a world and a Story Bible you keep whether or not you go further. Because the plan makes the chapter count a fact, the price of writing the book can be quoted exactly before a word of prose is generated. Writing then happens one scene at a time, so progress is visible and nothing is lost if you close the tab.

Where to find it: Dashboard → "Let Charm write it", the left of the three tiles.

What this covers

  • A whole-book plan from one description: acts, chapters, cast and world
  • A length you choose, which sets the chapter count and the price
  • The AI model that writes it, chosen per book, with the price moving to match
  • The language the book is written in, set before it starts
  • An opening you already wrote, pasted in as the voice to build on
  • Editable outline before anything is written: retitle, reorder, add, remove
  • The exact price, shown before the writing starts
  • Scene-by-scene writing, roughly 600 to 900 words at a time, with a printed break where the story cuts to another time or place
  • Story Bible built as the book is written
  • A quality check on every chapter, with the scores kept
  • Decision points at the big turns, with the roads not taken recorded
  • Take another road, which re-plans the chapters not yet written
  • Tell Charm something in your own words, at any decision point
  • How often Charm stops to ask is yours to set
  • Continuity scans at act boundaries
  • Pause, close the tab, and pick it up later
  • Hands the finished manuscript to Finish Book

How to use it

  1. 1

    Describe the book

Give it a title and describe it the way you would tell a friend: who it is about, what happens to them, what it costs them. The more you say, the more the plan sounds like yours. Genre, point of view, tense and tone are not asked for at all — Charm decides them from your description and then holds to them. Three things below the description are worth a moment: how long the book should be, which sets the chapter count and therefore the price; the language the book is written in, which starts on whatever language the app is in and can only be set here; and "Already started? Paste what you have", where an old opening or an abandoned chapter becomes the voice the book is built on. Paste a few pages there, not a finished manuscript — a manuscript belongs in Import, which is free.

  2. 2

Choose how often Charm asks you

After every chapter, at the big turns, or never. Charm makes the same decisions either way and tells you what it chose. This only sets whether it waits for you.

  3. 3

Read the plan and settle the forks

Charm returns a logline, acts, a chapter list and a handful of genuine either/ors. Retitle, reorder, delete or add chapters, answer the questions that matter to you, and leave the rest to Charm with "Let Charm decide". Anything you leave is settled later, at the point in the book where it actually matters. Editing the chapter list changes what the book costs, and the price on the next screen is recalculated from the list as you left it.

  4. 4

    Check the price

The quote is exact rather than a range, because the chapter count is now a fact. If your balance will not cover the whole book you can write what you can afford and continue later, or keep the plan and the Story Bible and write it yourself.

  5. 5

    Let it write

Charm writes scene by scene and shows you which chapter and which scene it is on. You can close the window: everything is saved after every scene. An unfinished book says so in two places, on your dashboard and inside the book itself, each naming the chapter it stopped at and offering to carry on.

  6. 6

    Steer, or do not

At the turns you chose, Charm names a decision, takes a road, and keeps writing. Answer whenever you like. Keeping its choice costs nothing, taking another road re-plans the chapters that are not written yet without touching the ones that are, and "Tell Charm something" lets you say anything at all in your own words — a note is carried into the prose ahead without changing the outline.

  7. 7

    Finish and package it

When the last chapter is written, open Finish Book to run a whole-book review, add front and back matter and a cover, and export to EPUB, DOCX, Markdown or HTML.

What it gives you

The price is exact before you commit

Planning is what turns the chapter count into a fact, and a fact is what makes an exact quote possible. You are never asked to agree to a range and find out afterwards.

The cheap half is genuinely cheap

A plan costs a fraction of a credit and leaves you a real Story Bible and an outlined manuscript. If you decide not to have it written, you still walk away with something you can write from.

Nothing is lost when you walk away

The run is a record rather than a session. Closing the tab stops it and loses nothing, and a run that stops because credits ran out says so and resumes where it stopped.

Steering never makes you wait

Charm decides, writes one more chapter, and only then stops for you. If you are there, you answer and nothing pauses. If you are not, at most one chapter was written down a road you might change.

Every chapter is checked

Each finished chapter goes through the same review the manual editor uses, including a score for how machine-generated the prose reads. When the run finishes you see every chapter listed with its own two scores, not an average, and any chapter that fell short and could not be mended is marked so you know where to start reading. If the background work on a chapter did not finish, such as folding it into the Story Bible, that chapter is named there too, so a thinner Bible is something you are told about rather than something you notice later. If the check found something and Charm fixed it, that chapter is marked with a pen: the score you see is the mark it got on the first read, before the fix, so a mended chapter reads better than its number says.

Good to know

  • Measured on books of up to sixteen chapters, in English, Ukrainian and Czech. Longer books are less well tested.
  • The prose is not perfectly even across a whole book. In our own measurements the later chapters of a book scored a little lower for naturalness than the opening ones, most noticeably in Czech.
  • A whole book costs real credits. Plan first, read the quote, and decide then.
  • Steering is forward only. Changing a decision re-plans the chapters ahead and never rewrites chapters already written.
  • The result is a first draft. It is reviewed chapter by chapter, but it has not been edited by a person and it is not ready to publish unread.
  • The tab drives the run. Closing it stops the writing safely, but the book does not continue while you are away.
  • Charm invents the small things it is not told, such as what someone is wearing or the name of a street. It will not invent a death, a marriage or a revelation that the plan did not call for.

Questions

Does it really write the entire book?

Yes. Every chapter from the first to the last, written scene by scene, with the Story Bible built as it goes. It is a first draft rather than a finished book, and every chapter carries its own review score so you can see where it is strongest and weakest.

How much does it cost?

Planning costs a fraction of a credit and is covered by the credits a new account starts with. Writing is quoted exactly once the plan exists, based on the number of chapters and how long they are, and you see that number before you agree to it. The AI model is yours to pick in the wizard as well, and the quote moves with it: the more capable model writes richer prose and costs more credits per chapter, and you see the new figure before you agree.

What if I run out of credits half way through?

The run stops at a chapter boundary, never in the middle of one, and says that credits are why it stopped. Top up and the next chapter starts exactly where it left off.

Can I change my mind about the story once it has started?

Yes, at the decision points. Charm shows you the road it took and the ones it did not, and taking another one re-plans everything not yet written. Chapters already written are never rewritten, so a change of direction applies from that point onward.

What if I do not want to be asked anything?

Set it to never. Charm still makes the same decisions and still records what it chose, so you can read them afterwards, but it will not stop and wait at any point.

Can Charm write the book in a different language from the app?

Yes. Book language sits on the first screen, under how long the book should be, and it starts on whatever language the app is in. Set it to Ukrainian while the app stays English and the whole book arrives in Ukrainian: the plan, the chapter titles, the questions Charm asks you and every word of the prose. It is worth setting before you press Plan my book rather than after, because the plan is written in it too.

I already started this book. Where do I put what I have?

It depends how much of it there is. A few pages, an opening you abandoned, a chapter that never went anywhere: paste it into "Already started? Paste what you have" on the first screen, and Charm reads it for the voice and plans the book it is the beginning of. A real manuscript belongs in Import instead, which reads it chapter by chapter, builds your Story Bible from it and carries on from your last page.

Can I edit what it writes?

Yes. It is an ordinary book in your library from the first chapter onward. You can open any chapter, edit it by hand or with the Smart Editor, talk to Charm about it, and finish it the same way as any other book.

Do I have to declare that it was written with AI?

Some shops, including Amazon KDP, require it. CharmWriter adds an AI assistance note to your book details by default so the declaration is there if you need it, and you can remove it in Finish Book if you would rather.
