CharmWriter 2.2: Our Biggest Update Yet
Founder of CharmWriter
The Short Version
CharmWriter 2.2 is the biggest update we have shipped. Three things changed: the AI that writes your prose, the way Charm keeps a long book straight, and what happens when a chapter is done. One thing did not change, and it is the one that matters most. Nothing you have already written is touched. Your chapters, your Story Bible and your notes stay exactly as they are.
Here is what is new, and where to find it.
Meet Charm 2.2 and Quill 2.2
CharmWriter has two new writers.
Charm 2.2 is our new everyday writer and the best choice for most books. It writes better prose than the model before it, and it gives you more words for every credit. It runs on Claude Sonnet 5.5, Anthropic’s newest model of its kind, and it thinks briefly before it writes, which is where the better prose comes from. In a spoken conversation it answers straight away, so talking with Charm feels as quick as it always has.
Quill 2.2 is our most capable writer. It runs on Claude Opus 5.5 and is made for the scenes a book stands on and for books with a complicated structure. It thinks before it writes, so its first words take a moment longer, and Charm shows you while it is thinking. That thinking is included in its price. Quill 2.2 uses more credits per word than Charm 2.2, and for a demanding chapter it is worth it.
Two more options complete the list. Spark is the fastest, for brainstorming, notes and short replies. Charm Classic is the model CharmWriter has written with until now, and it is still an excellent writer.
One more thing for anyone writing dark or mature fiction. If Charm 2.2 or Quill 2.2 ever declines a scene, Charm tries it once more on Charm Classic by itself, and you are not charged for the attempt that was declined.
Your Books Keep Their Voice
If you were writing with CharmWriter before 2.2, your account stays on Charm Classic. We did not switch anyone’s model behind their back, because a book that is half written already has a voice, and that voice is yours to protect.
When you are ready, open Settings and pick Charm 2.2. Each option explains itself right there in the list. Switching only changes what Charm writes next. Everything already in your book stays exactly as it is, and you can switch back whenever you like. If you are in the middle of a long book and you love how it sounds, there is no rush. The personalisation guide has the details.
Charm Remembers
A long book is a long list of facts. Who is where. Who got hurt. Who knows the secret and who does not. Which threads are still open. Try holding all of that in your head for forty chapters and something slips. An AI has the same problem.
Charm Remembers is how CharmWriter 2.2 holds on to them. When you finish a session or complete a chapter, Charm shows you the hard facts that chapter settled, each one tied to the sentence in your book that settled it. Keep the ones you want with one press. From then on they are in front of Charm every time it writes, so chapter forty still knows what chapter two decided.
It remembers nothing without your OK. It takes facts only from prose that reached your manuscript, never from a chat or your notes, and you can forget any fact later in the character’s window. The Story Bible guide explains how it fits with everything else Charm keeps.
Editor’s Notes You Can Act On
Chapter Review used to hand you a report. In 2.2 it hands you notes, the way a good editor does. Each one says what to change, where it is and why it matters to a reader, and it sits right in your text, numbered, on the passage it is about.
Press Apply AI fix and Charm rewrites just that passage and shows you the change before anything lands. When the same problem turns up in several places, Fix all works through them one at a time. You accept or reject each change before Charm moves on to the next, and Stop ends it without spending anything more. A note you disagree with goes away with Dismiss.
Notes from a Book Review work the same way now. Open one and the chapter opens with the note on screen, so you never have to hunt for the passage it meant. The Chapter Review guide walks through it.
Two Ways to Polish
When a chapter is finished, Polish now asks how far you want to go, and nothing is spent until you choose.
Proofread fixes spelling, grammar, punctuation and words from the wrong language, and leaves your style alone. It costs less, and in Ukrainian and Czech it is a real proofreader that catches borrowed words and, in Czech, missing diacritics. It replaces what used to be called Language check.
Line edit goes a step further. It also fixes echoes, filler, stock phrasing and unclear references, and it changes only the words that carry the problem. It never deletes or adds a sentence. Every change shows the words it swaps and a short reason why, and one click accepts all the grammar fixes at once, so the only changes you need to read are the ones about style.
And Plenty of Smaller Touches
A release this size is also a long list of small things, and many of them came from writers who took the time to tell us. A few of them:
On a phone, every chapter on the Book screen has its own menu, so you can open its draft, finish it or delete it from one place.
The first time you finish a chapter, a few short tips show you the order that works best: review first, then polish, then complete.
When Proofread or Line edit finds nothing to change, it says so, instead of leaving you wondering.
A fact Charm Remembers keeps can be edited in a box that grows as you type.
Changes you save in the Smart Editor show up in your workspace draft straight away.
Try It
If you have a book open, the easiest way to meet 2.2 is to finish a chapter and let Charm review it, then open Settings and give Charm 2.2 a scene. If you are new here, every account starts with two free credits, and new accounts write with Charm 2.2 from the first word.
And if something does not work the way it should, or you think of something CharmWriter should do, tell us with the bug button inside any book. We read every one, and a good part of this release started as a note from a writer.
Frequently asked questions
Will updating to CharmWriter 2.2 change my book?
No. The update changes nothing you have already written. If you had an account before 2.2, you stay on Charm Classic, the model you were writing with, until you choose another in Settings. Switching only affects what Charm writes next.
Which model should I choose in CharmWriter 2.2?
Charm 2.2 suits most books: better prose and more words per credit than Charm Classic. Choose Quill 2.2 for the most demanding scenes and structure, Spark for quick brainstorming and notes, and Charm Classic to keep a book’s voice exactly as it has been.
Does CharmWriter 2.2 cost more?
No. Credit prices have not changed. Charm 2.2 gives you more words for each credit than Charm Classic. Quill 2.2 uses more credits per word because it thinks before it writes, and that thinking is included in its price.
