The reason this category appeared is that prompt-and-print services ask the wrong person to do the work. A weekly email lands, and somebody in their eighties with sixty years of stories has to sit down and compose an essay. Most do it four times and stop, and everyone in the family half knew that when they bought it.

For a memoir it is stranger and more useful than it sounds — you are not talking to your grandfather, you are talking to the version of him your pages have described so far, and finding out how thin that version still is tells you exactly which chapter to write next.

Nothing said in those conversations is written into your manuscript. A fact only reaches the Story Bible when you read it and press the button yourself.

A produced book is finished when it is delivered. That is a feature — the project ends, the hardcover exists, the family reads it — and it is the point at which the two products stop resembling each other at all.

A manuscript is not finished when it is good; it is finished when you say so.
